Beautiful Day
It was another beautiful day in the Salish Sea. We started the morning trip out with some harbor porpoise swimming in the currents of Rosario Strait and Guemes Channel. We headed south and found lots of harbor seals hauled out on the south end of Colville Island. We continued west in search of other animals. At Middle Bank we made a turn for Hein Bank. Hein Bank is where we found a minke whale! He was exhibiting a fairly rhythmic breathing sequence. Surfacing three times then going down on his deeper dive. We saw another minke in the distance, but we couldn't find him again. On our way back toward the dock, we did a slow down through the south end of Lopez Island. There was an eaglet in its nest in McArdle Bay! It was perched on the edge. We found a mature eagle (likely one of the eaglet's parents) on the other side of Lopez Island and watched as it took flight! It was a phenomenal morning on the water with sunshine and beautiful water!
The evening trip took an entirely different route. We had word that there were some orca whales up north that were headed our direction, but they had slowly turned and were making their way away from us. We decided to go for it! We found a bald eagle on the southeast corner of Guemes Island. In Rosario Strait, there were some Dall's porpoise as well as some harbor porpoise. As we continued north past Point Roberts, it was all eyes out on deck. No boat had been on scene for quite a while. We scanned and scanned. We past the coal docks and the Tsawwassen ferry terminal in BC, even past the T14 buoy to the Fraser River delta. We were working in cooperation with all the other whale watching boats in the area. There was one boat that was about 15 miles north of where we were and covered that 15 miles without seeing a whale. It is very rare that the whales just disappear like that. We searched for awhile longer before we finally had to head back to the dock, but that didn't mean we stopped looking. We searched and searched until it started getting dark. Out of all of the boats that were out searching, no one found the orcas! We don't know where they went! We did have a gorgeous sunset over the islands. And because we couldn't find whales, our customers get to come back for free until they do see a whale! Being out on the water was a wonderful way to spend the picturesque evening.
