Whales in Canada!
Our day started off with five bald eagles in and around Guemes and Huckleberry Island. We avoided all of the fog in Guemes Channel and Rosario Strait. We went on a beautiful tour of the inner islands. There were harbor porpoise and even some Dall's porpoise. We finally caught up to most of J-pod and a couple of L-pod whales who were sleeping off of North Pender Island. We saw so many dorsal fins come up at the same time. The whales we identified were: Ruffles, Granny, Spieden, Slick, Mike, Keet, Alki, Echo, Shachi, Eclipse, Riptide, Canuck and Lulu. We got some beautiful looks with a gorgeous backdrop of North Pender Island. We spent a good amount of time with them as they continued to sleep. Then one of the whales tail lobbed and the whales spread out a little bit more, but continued in their sleeping pattern. We eventually had to leave them and head back home. On our way back into US waters, we came across even more J-pod whales! Tsuchi spyhopped for us right under Mt. Baker. Mako started playing with some bull kelp and pulled it around to the stern of the boat. He looked up at us and checked us out! Then, Blackberry came up and gave us a quick "swim-by." What a finale! It was amazing, such a treat! On our way back, we found an osprey in its nest on Crane Island. It was simply a beautiful day with no fog and two separate groups of whales!
