L-pod
Today has to be the hottest day of the year so far, and what a day on the water! We started off with a turkey vulture soaring over Cap Sante. We found lots of harbor porpoise swimming in Guemes Channel and Rosario Strait. There were harbor seals hauled out on Colville Island. There were even some pups that we could see! As we made our way east, we came across some orcas! The first whales we were on scene with were Surprise and her newest calf born late last year, L112. There were also some whales further inshore. Soon they all changed direction and headed back up island, it was like they came south to meet us, then turned north. We watched some fishing behavior as well as a few breaches off in the distance. We moved up to catch up with some other whales who were a bit more elusive and ended up seeing Surprise again, this time with both of her calves, Pooka and L112. We got some great looks as they all surfaced together. After awhile, we headed offshore and found Baba and her grandson Crewser. They came up with Mt. Baker in the background, making it the perfect shot! Eventually we had to leave the whales and head back toward the dock. We did a slow down through the south end of Lopez Island and Castle Rock. There was a bald eagle perched in a tree on Lopez. It was a gorgeous day in the Salish Sea, warm weather, L-pod whales, calm water and sunshine!
