Double Header!
Our trip started out in Guemes Channel and Rosario Strait where we saw lots of harbor porpoise. On Blakely Island, we found a bald eagle perched in a tree. We made our way all the way through inner islands. On Spieden Island, we found fallow and sika deer as well as two belted kingfishers flying toward the island. As we exited Spieden Channel, we found some L-pod orcas! The first whales we saw were Alexis, Spirit, Skana, Solstice, Matia and Mystery. They were all tightly grouped up. After a couple of tail lobs, they started waking up a bit. We spent some time with that group before we moved on to Mega, Calypso and Calypso's calf L113. We definitely got to see the mother showing her new baby how to go after a fish. Mega took us south, where we actually had a chance to meet up with Solstice again as he led the other whales south past Lime Kiln Lighthouse. We got some great looks at him as he fished in the current lines. We had to leave the whales behind us as we headed down San Juan Island. At Salmon Bank, Captain Carl slowed down the boat because he saw a minke whale ahead of us, at the exact moment I found another minke whale on our port side! We got a couple of good looks at those whales before we continued on our way. However, we found one more minke! It was a great day spent on the water with both L-pod and three minke whales!
