Transient Orca Whales Just West of Anacortes

Explorer 3 on scene with Transient Orca Whales in Rosario Strait, reports Captain Carl. Stay tuned for updates from Naturalist Brooke McKinley.

It was a gorgeous day on the water. We started off with a California sea lion and some harbor porpoise in Guemes Channel. We headed north up Rosario Strait toward Eagle Bluff on Cypress Island, where we found some transient orcas! We got to visit with the T-100s and the T-101s, totally 7 whales. When we got on scene, they were actually swimming around in a circle possibly teaching the young 4 year old whale (T-100D) how to hunt. They did a few tail lobs and even a spyhop that turned into a lunge. They maintained this pattern for quite a few dive sequences before they headed north toward Pt. Lawrence. Captain Carl decided that we would take a little detour and go check out the bald eagles on Towhead Island. It was an amazing eagle show, with both immature and mature birds, chasing each other, feeding on an octopus on the shore and soaring high above the island. We got some amazing looks at about 6 eagles total! We left the eagles behind and headed back to join our whales. They made it to Pt. Lawrence and continued north toward Barnes and Clark Islands. We were able to spend a lot of time with the whales today because they really weren't traveling too fast. We took a different route on our way back toward the marina, around Sinclair Island and Vendovi Island. There was another California sea lion hauled out on a channel marker and some harbor seals hauled out on some rocks. We found so many more eagles on the way home; I definitely lost track! We even got to check out a bald eagles nest on the Guemes Island. It was nice to hang out with the transients and all of the eagles today!
Spyhop!
