Orca Whales Sighted From Island Explorer 3
Sunshine and Orca Whales reports Captain Carl from Island Explorer 3. Check back for updates from Naturalist Brooke McKinley.
Today started with harbor porpoise in Rosario Strait. We made our way to the south end of San Juan Island where we found some J-pod whales playing in the current off of Pile Point. The first whales we encounter were Polaris, Princess Angeline and her new calf, J44. The little one was playing and breaching. We also saw Blackberry, Tsuchi and Mako. We also saw a couple spyhops, cartwheels and even a headstand! The sun decided to come out and continued to shine the rest of the day! We also had a great finale of one of the whales breached twice for us. They continued north up island and we turned and headed home. On our way back, we found harbor seals hauled out on Swirl Rocks. We did a slow down through the south end of Lopez Island and Castle Rock where we found two turkey vultures, seals and pigeon guillemots. As we rounded the south end of Lopez Island, a couple of our customers found a minke whale! He was very elusive and only popped up twice, but it was nice to see another type of whale! It was such a beautiful day out on the water with sunshine and J-pod!
