J-Pod Orca Whales in Sight

The Island Explorer 3 is on scene with Orca Whales near Salmon Bank, reports Captain Michael. For tomorrow, the weather forecast has improved and we are definitely going out - should be a great day with lots of whales in the area. Stay tuned for updates on today's tour from Naturalist Brooke McKinley.

What a day! We had flat calm waters all day! Our wildlife started off with a California sea lion hauled out on the channel marker in Guemes Channel and a bald eagle soaring above Guemes Island. There were lots of harbor porpoise in Rosario Strait. We saw some harbor seals hauled out at the south end of Colville Island. It wasn't long before we saw some orca whales! We spent our day with Granny, Slick, Mike, Keet and Echo. We got some great looks as the whales moved offshore a bit. Granny did a couple of tail lobs. Echo decided that she was going to show off for everyone and breached multiple times! Mike swam to the west a little bit, then came back around and met up with Slick, Keet and Echo. It was so great to see J-pod today. As we headed back we went by the south end of Lopez Island, where we saw another bald eagle and a harbor seal hauled out. As we came back in, we got to see our friend the California sea lion still hauled out on the channel marker! It was such a fantastic day on the water with great wildlife!
