Orca Whales Sighted
Captain Michael reports Orca Whales in sight near Salmon Bank. Stay tuned for updates from Naturalist Brooke McKinley.
Our day started off with lots of harbor porpoise in Guemes Channel and Rosario Strait. We made our way to the south end of Colville Island and found some harbor seals hauled out of the water and we even got a great look at a bald eagle who was perched on the island. He decided to take flight; it was an amazing look. As we made our way up the west side of San Juan Island, we found some L-pod whales! It was awesome! They were headed down the island, so we got to spend so much time with them! We had some amazing looks at Surprise and Pooka, mother and son, as they passed by our stern. We watched them all move down the island and even saw a few breaches in the distance. We waited until they all swam by, then we headed off shore a bit to see if we could catch up with some of them again. They came out and decided to give us a really great "swim-by," complete with an amazing breach near the boat from L-82 Kasatka! It was so nice to hang out with our L-pod friends. As we made our way back, in Rosario Strait, we had the most amazing harbor porpoise encounters! They were swimming all around us and porpoising and groups! Anywhere you looked you could see them! They were even enjoying our stern wake! I have never seen harbor porpoise like that before! In Guemes Channel, we came across a California sea lion hauled out on the channel marker. It was a nice little treat before we made it home. It was such a great day on the water with L-pod and the harbor porpoise today!
