J-Pod in Rosario Strait
The Island Explorer 3 is on scene with J-Pod Orca Whales, reports Captain Carl. Stay tuned for updates from Naturalist Brooke McKinley.
J-pod is back! We got word as we were leaving the dock that J-pod had been seen southbound in Rosario Strait. So we made a beeline for the whales. By the time we caught up to them (the current was helping them along quite quickly) they were at the south end of Lopez Island. The first whale we visited with was Ruffles! He definitely was a crowd favorite. Closer to shore, a little one kept doing side lunges and an older male kept doing tail lobs. It was clear they were having a great day! Next, we caught up with Polaris and her new baby, born late last year! Blackberry gave us a quick swim-by as well. Then, Samish and her new baby Se-Yi'-Chn, passed by us as well. Soon after that, Doublestuf and Oreo went by our boat as well. We caught up to the whales one more time and Blackberry decided to spend a little extra time with us. We saw a couple breaches and lots of playful activities. We left the whales and headed up San Juan Channel in search of calmer water. We found some harbor porpoise hanging out near James Island. As we made our way back, we stopped by the south east side of Guemes Island and our guest got to see a bald eagles' nest, complete with the mother in it and the father came and landed in a nearby tree. There were so many harbor porpoise as well in the waters off Guemes Island. It was such a great day hanging out with our J-pod friends!
