"It felt like summer out in the Salish Sea today. We had blue sky thanks to the Olympic Mountains and flat calm conditions as we ventured out into the Strait of Juan de Fuca. Before spending some time with Orcas we stopped off at Colville Island to enjoy a look at some lounging Harbor Seals on its rocky shoreline. Then we continued on towards Hein Bank where we found not only members of all 3 Southern Resident Pods but also some Dall's Porpoise that were mixed in with them! They may have tried to become honorary pod members! The whales were spread out over a couple of miles and in every direction one could see dorsal fins as they continued moving off shore. Then the leading group stalled and milled a while before heading back towards Salmon Bank. This continued on until it was decided by one of the matriarch no doubt to move back off shore. We watched an array of different behaviors from taillobing, spyhopping, porpoising and even some good pec slaps! The sounds of their exhalations could be heard quite some distance and thanks to some friends we were able to hear the whale communicating! Their vocalizations coupled with the surface activity was moving. Yet another incredible day with some phenomenal wildlife!" - Naturalist Kate Janes
