Orca Whales North of Patos Island

The Island Explorer 3 is on-scene with the Orca Whales - click here to see the location of the whales from space and stay tuned for updates from Naturalist Jami Nagel. "Today made my top 10! We found ourselves just north of Patos Island with a large portion of L-pod. They were heading toward J's and K's coming down the from the north in the Strait of Georgia. As they neared each other we were treated a greeting ceremony (only my second out of my 5 years on the boat!). L pod was lined up at the surface, while J pod came toward them in a V formation traveling at the surface without diving for several minutes. Soon the formalities were finished and it was all about greeting each other. There were numerous spyhops, cartwheels, breached and taillobbing everywhere you looked. The whales where pushing each other around at the surface and rubbing up against each other. From a human perspective it resemble teenage boys wrestling around with each other. We were also treated to many harbor seals and harbor porpoise along the way." -Naturalist Jami Nagel
