"It was a fall day out in the San Juan Islands as we ventured out in search of whales. At Colville Island a lone Harbor Seal balanced atop a rock while a mature Bald Eagle sat matter a fact on a prominent perch. As we navigated further out into the Strait of Juan de Fuca we encountered swimming Harbor Seals, Common Murres, Cormorants, a Common Loon and even a Pacific Loon. It was near Hein Bank that we found members of J & L pod having quite the time in the slight bump that had begun to form. It appeared the youngsters were enjoying an enhanced three dimensional playground as they breached, cartwheeled, and spyhopped. Celebrity, Ruffles (J1), was seen steadily cruising amongst a large group of varying sized fins. We also got the opportunity to see one of the newest members of J pod, as little J44 swam close to its mother Princess Angeline (J17) and older sister Polaris (J28). Traveling with Princess Angeline's family was Blackberry (J27), an 18 year old sprouter male. After visiting with the Orcas we returned towards Lopez Island where we found close to 20 Steller Sea Lions hauled out! A couple of the huge males began to reposition causing quite the disturbance as teeth became exposed and roars sounded. Not only did their vocalizations carry across the water but so did their stench- making it quite an unforgettable experience!" - Naturalist Kate Janes
