Finding Warmth (Steller Sea Lions)

"Our travels today lead us out into the Strait of Juan de Fuca where we found glass calm conditions making it easy to seeing swimming Harbor Seals, feeding Harbor Porpoise, Red-necked Phalaropes fluttering quickly above the water while huge rafts of Common Murres quickly dove in search of bait fish. In Haro Strait we found members of J & K pod Orcas. Lobo (K26) showed off his growing dorsal fin as he moved confidently up island. There were a number of whales making the move northward off shore while a large group of 15 or so, including Blackberry (J27), hugged the shoreline. It was incredible to see just how close they were to the island. As they swam we witnessed a couple of spyhops, taillobes and a few pec slaps. The sound of their exhalations continued to be heard as they continued past us still moving north. On our return towards home we found some feeding Dall's Porpoise and a Steller Sea Lion chowing down on a huge Salmon! Nearby some of his pals were hauled out on Whale Rocks- a favorite location for our visiting Stellers." - Naturalist Kate Janes
