Beautiful Day Made Better With Orca Whales!

The Island Explorer 3 is currently on-scene with Orcas! Check back to hear about today's adventure from Naturalist Bart Rulon. All three pods of orcas were swimming in past Victoria today as we cruised out to reach them. They were just east of Victoria by the time we saw our first dorsal fins. The orcas were split up into two groups, one with most of L-pod, and the other with mostly J and K pod members. We chose to watch the group of J and K pods. This group also had several L-pod whales mixed in too. We saw Cappuccino, K21, Ruffles, J1, Granny, J2, Mike, J26, Blackberry, J27, Polaris, J28, Speiden, J8, and many others. They were grouped up into a resting mode. Soon after we arrived a couple of calves started playing and they did several spyhops, some rolling around, and some swimming upside down. Later, all the orcas swam right in front of Mount Baker creating a perfect photo opportunity. As we headed back home we managed to find a bald eagle at Colville Island, and Captain Mike lined the bird up nicely with Mount Baker as a backdrop. Today we also spotted harbor seals, and harbor porpoises, plus lots of common murres, double-crested cormorants, and a few marbled murrelets. Naturalist Bart Rulon
