Watching Decisions Being Made!
"Today's journey took us into the Strait of Georgia as we navigated through pockets of low lying clouds that casted a magical aura on the islands we explored. At the north end of Lummi Island we found blue skies, Harbor Porpoise, Harbor Seals and many members of the alcid family swimming atop the water. Just south of Point Roberts we spotted Orcas! Members of all 3 pods of Southern Resident Orcas (J, K, & L pods) were spread out for miles just milling around the north end of Haro Strait. It seemed they were in the process of deciding which body of water to traverse through. From a distance the tall wavy dorsal fin of Ruffles was seen amongst a large group that were having long down times. We ended up visiting with a group of 7 whales and had individuals from all 3 families! We found Samish traveling with her brood (Hy'shqua, Suttles, & little J45) in close proximity to her. While her eldest son, Riptide, trailed her playing about with Raggedy (K40) and Onyx (L87)! After a beautiful visit with the whales a decision was made as they began heading towards Boundary Pass. On our journey back to Anacortes we stopped by Puffin Island where we found over 50 Harbor Seals hauled out and an immature & mature Bald Eagles perched in a tree close to their huge nest!" - Naturalist Kate Janes
