Rare Fluke Today
This morning our first wildlife stop was at Colville Island where we spotted five harbor seals hauled out on the rocks. Next we worked our way westward into the areas we spotted whales during our morning trip from yesterday. We eventually worked all the way to Hein Bank then back to Salmon Bank in search of whales. After being out in open water for a while we pulled back in toward shore at Whale Rocks to look at a large grouping of harbor seals both in and out of the water. After scanning for whales more we pulled in at the south end of Lopez Island to visit a bald eagle's nest, and we watched two adult bald eagles preening themselves for about five minutes. Despite all of us working very hard looking for whales during the entire trip we weren't able to find any today. This was definitely a rarity today, but our passengers received fluke passes which allow them to come back again for a free trip until they are able to see whales with us. Other wildlife we spotted today included harbor porpoises, rhinoceros auklets, common murres, double-crested cormorants, brants cormorants, pelagic cormorants, turkey vultures, pigeon guillemots, and marbled murrelets.
