Orca Whales in Sight

Captain Carl reports the Explorer 3 is on-scene with the Orca Whales. Stay tuned for updates from Naturalist Kate Janes.
AM: "Under a blanket of clouds the Island Explorer 3 made its way out into the islands in search of wildlife. At the south end of Lopez Island we found over 20 Harbor Seals hauled out on Colville Island enjoying the warmth of the day. Venturing offshore of the islands we found members of L & K pod Orcas spread out and pursuing some tasty Salmon. The first whale we encountered was young Crewser, his aunt Bellena, & his grandmother Baba. Crewser after a few moments disappeared into the watery abyss and then without warning appeared off our port side in one quick fluid movement as if he were chasing a sizable Salmon. Then he circled back and made a pass along side the boat so that everyone was able to get a good look! We then began the move with the whales back towards the shore. That's where we found members of K pod. Lea, Lobo, Yoda and little K42 were in tight formation heading towards Haro Strait. After a great visit with the Orcas we began the journey back towards the dock and on the way found a couple of Minke Whales that were very surface active. Quite the doubleheader!!" - Naturalist Kate Janes
