"With sunscreen applied we took off from Anacortes out under a beautiful July blue sky. Our first stop was Colville Island where we found lots of birds feeding near Lawson Reef, over 20 Harbor Seals soaking up the sun, a few Turkey Vultures scanning the area and even a mature Bald Eagle perched with a watchful eye towards the Strait of Juan de Fuca. Out into the strait we went in search for cetaceans and to our delight we found 5 apparently very hungry Minke Whales feeding on Hein Bank! Not only did we enjoy watching from all around the boat various whales surfacing causing the birds to take flight from atop the water but also we were able to SMELL their breath! Minke Whales have earned the nickname "Stinky Minkes" because of its foulness! One whale gave us a really great close look and even left us a present (Minke poop) that we could see just below the surface of the water!" - Naturalist Kate Janes
