A tufted puffin and a harbor seal

Captain Carl reports Orca Whales at Salmon Bank today! Stand by for more information from naturalist Bart Rulon. Wild Birds Unlimited stores had their national conference this week and they booked a private whale watch with us today. This group was very interested in birds as well as whales, and they had great luck with both. One of our passengers spotted the first whale of the day, a minke whale, which surprized us all while we were looking for birds near Swirl Rocks. Next we found J-pod orcas just east of False Bay. The group we spent the most time with was Blackberry, J27, Tsushi, J31, and Mako, J39. Soon after we arrived Tsushi breached for us twice with Mount Baker right behind her! During many occasions we saw orcas chasing fish at the surface. We spent plenty of time watching Blackberry, as he ventured closest to us. He spy hopped for us 4 times over the span of 15 minutes. Our passengers were also very thrilled later in the trip when we stopped to watch some birds and a tufted puffin flew in and landed. Later another puffin flew by and circled around our boat giving everyone a great view. At Castle Island and Swirl Rocks we also saw a total of three black ostercatchers. Other wildlife we spotted today included harbor seals, harbor porpoises, pigeon guillemots, rhinoceros auklets, common murres, bald eagles, and all three cormorant species. What a fantastic day for whales and birds! Naturalist Bart Rulon.
